Hoodwinked and bamboozled -- yet again Part 1 the ubiquitous thirst for "firsts" is just plain insanity!

I said I wasn't going to watch this shit but, I had to -- if I wanted to critique it.

The unquenchable thirst for a "first this," or "first that" doesn't always denote the accomplishment of some, one-of a kind superhuman feat -- it's merely power's permission to let one play too, and usually for their benefit.  Such is the scam known as the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination -- Exhibit A ("The Donald's" wedding):

"The question is not whether we will be extremists, but what kind of extremists we will be... The nation and the world are in dire need of creative extremists."

“Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them, and these will continue till they are resisted with either words or blows, or both. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress." (emphasis mine)

I'm sure those who "felt the Bern" thought they'd made a demand (and in some ways they did!).  The problem though, was they weren't paying attention to the machinations of  "power" which counted on the people's desire for yet another "first."  So -- here we go again!

I had a conversation about Bernie with my alabaster brother, Alex in Key West last year and he was definitely "feelin' the Bern," particularly once Trump proved to be a legitimate GOP candidate!  In support of my argument that this was all a scam to get Killary Hillary elected being perpetrated on the American people by the powers that be, I shared this piece, written by Bruce Dixon on  May 6, 2015 over at Black Agenda Report:  Presidential Candidate Bernie Sanders: Sheepdogging for Hillary and the Democrats in 2016

“Where justice is denied, where poverty is enforced, where ignorance prevails, and where any one class is made to feel that society is an organized conspiracy to oppress, rob and degrade them, neither persons nor property will be safe.”

“It is not light that we need, but fire; it is not the gentle shower, but thunder. We need the storm, the whirlwind, and the earthquake.”

A brief pause for the cause

I've been working on another post since September (around Yom Kippur to be exact).  But I read this tonight and I just had to ask, "What does this look like, sound like, feel like -- to you?"

Int’l Election Observers Grumble, But Agree Not to Enter U.S. Polling Places Where Law Forbids
The OSCE, a grouping of 56 member nations in Europe, Central Asia and North America, says its members are obliged to have their elections observed, under an agreement signed in Denmark in 1990, which says member states will invite observers “to observe the course of their national election proceedings, to the extent permitted by law.”
Screw that, "agreement signed" and "will invite" shit. The operative, and most important phrase to recognize is -- "to the extent permitted by law (in other words, "We got an out!").  To wit, the "Belly of the Beast" in which I live, along with Iowa, have not only said, "No!" -- but, "Ha-a-ayell no!"

Another one of those "points to ponder":
In its report after the 2008 election, the organization said its observers were unable to access polling stations in Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Ohio and Texas due to state laws, and had also faced difficulties doing so in some specific locations in Colorado, Louisiana, Pennsylvania and Virginia.
I'm gonna keep my thoughts about that to myself. But can somebody explain to me why we can send folk like Jimmy Carter, all over the world, to observe "Other" elections (because of course, as a representative of these alleged, United States, he's invited), but we, here, can pick and choose -- even though, we signed that pesky 1990 agreement?

Some points to ponder as you gear-up for Tuesday

The Virtual Economic Recovery
By Dr. Paul Craig Roberts
Global Research, October 30, 2012
Americans are far more oppressed by the power brokers in Washington than statistics display. Moreover, the young are born into the oppressive, exploitative American system and do not know any different. They are fed by the Presstitute media with endless propaganda about how fortunate they are and how indispensable their wonderful country is. Americans are kept in a constant state of amusement, and many never grasp the loss of their civil liberties, job and career opportunities, and respect that the US won during the decades-long cold war with Soviet Communism.

Police State USA: In Amerika there will Never be a Real Debate
By Dr. Paul Craig Roberts
Global Research, October 24, 2012
No doubt that Americans, if they think of this at all, believe that it will only happen to terrorists who deserve it. But as no evidence or due process is required, how would we know that it only happens to terrorists? Can we really trust a government that has started wars in 7 countries on the basis of falsehoods? If the US government will lie about Iraqi weapons of mass destruction in order to invade a country, why won’t it lie about who is a terrorist?

America needs a debate about how we can be made more safe by removing the Constitutional protection of due process. If the power of government is not limited by the Constitution, are we ruled by Caesar? The Founding Fathers did not think we could trust a caesar with our safety. What has changed that we can now trust a caesar?

If we are under such a terrorist threat that the Constitution has to be suspended or replaced by unaccountable executive action, how come all the alleged terrorist cases are sting operations organized by the FBI? In eleven years there has not been a single case in which the “terrorist” had the initiative!

In the eleven years since 9/11, acts of domestic terrorism have been miniscule if they even exist. What justifies the enormous and expensive Department of Homeland Security? Why does Homeland Security have military-equipped Special Response Teams with armored vehicles? Who are the targets of these militarized units? If eleven years of US government murder, maiming, and displacement of millions of Muslims hasn’t provoked massive acts of domestic terrorism, why is Homeland Security creating a domestic armed force of its own? Why are there no congressional hearings and no public discussion? How can a government whose budget is deep in the red afford a second military force with no defined and Constitutionally legal purpose?

What is Homeland Security’s motivation in creating a Homeland Youth? Is the new FEMA Corps a disguise for a more sinister purpose, a Hitler Youth as Internet sites suggest? Are the massive ammunition purchases by Homeland Security related to the raising of a nationwide corps of 18- to 24-year-olds? How can so much be going on in front of our eyes with no questions asked?

Why did not Romney ask Obama why he is working to overturn the federal court’s ruling that US citizens cannot be subject to indefinite detention in violation of the US Constitution? Is it because Romney and his neoconservative advisers agree with Obama and his advisers? If so, then why is one tyrant better than another?

Why has the US constructed a network of detainment camps, for which it is hiring “internment specialists”?

Why does the US Army now have a policy for “establishing civilian inmate labor programs and civilian prison camps on Army installations“?...

...How wonderful it would have been for Obama and Romney to have confronted in a real debate how QE3, designed to help insolvent “banks too big to fail,” can help households operating, with two earners, on real incomes of 45 years ago, which is where the current real median household income stands.

How does saving a bank, designated as “too big to fail,” help the family whose jobs or main job has been exported to China or India in order to maximize corporate profits, executive performance bonuses and shareholders’ capital gains?

Obviously the working population of the US has been sacrificed to the profits of the mega-rich.

An appropriate debate question is: Why has the livelihood of working Americans been sacrificed to the profits of the mega-rich?

No such question will ever be asked in a “presidential debate.”

In the 21st century, US citizens became nonentities. They are brutalized by the police whose incomes their taxes pay. They, for protesting some injustice or for no cause at all, are beaten, arrested, tasered and even murdered. The police, paid by the public, beat up paralyzed people in wheel chairs, frame those who call them for help against criminals, taser grandmothers and small children, and shoot down in cold blood unarmed citizens who have done nothing except lose control of themselves, either through alcohol, drugs, or rage.

Brainwashed Americans pay large taxes at every level of government for protection against gratuitous violence, but what their taxes support is gratuitous violence against themselves. Every American, except for the small number of mega-rich who control Washington, can be arrested and dispossessed, both liberty and property, on the basis of nothing but an allegation of a member of the executive branch who might want the accused’s wife, girlfriend, property, or to settle a score, or to exterminate a rival, or to score against a high school, college, or business rival.

In America today, law serves the powerful, not justice. In effect, there is no law, and there is no justice. Only unaccountable power.

What is the point of a vote when the outcome is the same? Both candidates represent the interests of Israel, not the interests of the US. Both candidates represent the interests of the military/security complex, agribusiness, the offshoring corporations, the suppression of unions and workers, the total demise of civil liberty and the US Constitution, which is in the way of unbridled executive power .

In the US today, the power of money rules. Nothing else is in the equation. Why vote to lend your support to the continuation of your own exploitation? Every time Americans vote it is a vote for their own obliteration.

Obama-Romney: Two Defenders of American Imperialism
By Patrick Martin
Global Research, October 22, 2012
These disputes, however, take place within a common political framework. They amount to wrangling about which individual will be more effective in implementing a policy on which they fundamentally agree.

Behind the backs of the American people, the United States is preparing new military interventions and wars of aggression against Syria and Iran, first of all, and ultimately against China, Russia and other rival powers.

The entire process demonstrates the thoroughly undemocratic character of the election itself, in which the American people have no say on any of the fundamental issues.

Obama won the Democratic Party nomination in 2008 over Hillary Clinton in large measure because he positioned himself as the more “antiwar” of the two candidates, in part by repeatedly citing her 2002 vote to authorize George W. Bush’s war of aggression against Iraq. He won the general election over McCain by taking advantage of the massive popular discontent with the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Once in office, however, Obama reappointed Bush’s secretary of defense, Robert Gates, selected a former general as his national security adviser, and his “hawkish” former rival Hillary Clinton as secretary of state. He doubled and then tripled the US troop commitment to Afghanistan, while adhering to the withdrawal schedule in Iraq negotiated by the Bush administration.

Last year, Obama played the decisive role in facilitating the NATO war against Libya, which led to the overthrow and murder of Muammar Gaddafi and 50,000 deaths. Now his administration is preparing a similar fate for the Assad regime in Syria, where the US-instigated civil war has already claimed 30,000 lives.

US troops, warplanes and drone missiles are now deployed over a far wider area than under the Bush administration, including the Arabian Peninsula, the Horn of Africa, and much of the Sahara and North Africa, in addition to Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Libya’s Green Resistance Did It... And NATO Powers Are Covering Up
By Mark Robertson and Finian Cunningham
Global Research, September 20, 2012

The NATO powers and the bureaucrats they installed in Libya want you to think that all 5.6 million Libyans are happy that NATO and its proxy terrorists destroyed Libya, whose standard of living had been Africa’s highest under Gaddafi.

They want you to think that NATO brought “freedom and democracy” to Libya, not chaos and death.

They want you to think that there is no Green Resistance to the NATO imperialists or NATO’s Islamist allies in Benghazi.

In reality, the Resistance has been increasingly active since shortly after the murder of Muammar Gaddafi in October 2011, as will be shown below. They strike any NATO target they can, and they execute key Libyans who betrayed Gaddafi and sided with NATO. The Benghazi incident was merely their latest blow against what they see as NATO’s illegal occupation of their country.

Everyone in Libya knows about the Green Resistance, whose members are called “Tahloob” (Arabic for “Gaddafi loyalists”). The denial only happens outside of Libya, by the NATO powers and their dutiful Western mainstream media.

Because of this denial, and because most of the world’s people have forgotten about Libya, the internet is filled with blind guesses, unfounded claims, and ridiculous counterclaims regarding the Benghazi incident last week in which US Ambassador Christopher Stevens and at least three other American personnel were killed. And the NATO lie factory is operating at full blast.

UPDATE:

Got this email from my friend Eric Sheptock (now, the Chairman of SHARC!) today.  I met Eric in 2009, while I was in graduate school in DC.  I am so damned proud of this Brother! Never forgetting where he'd been, he turned his homelessness (in the shadows of the White House and Congress!) into some serious advocacy!  If you're anywhere in the area, please do check him out (info at the SHARC link)!

SHARC Update and Discussion Points for November 5th Meeting,
Scanned Documents from Today's MTG & Updated demand List

All,

People did a great job coming together to make the October 29th event happen. However, Sandy tested our resilience. Let's not despair; but rather, let's get reinvigorated for yet another round of homeless advocacy. Below and attached you'll see discussion points for our next weekly meeting. Please read them and come full of ideas that we can discuss as we chart the path forward.

Also attached are the scanned documents from the mayor's office and the demand list relabeled as "SHARC Homeless Town Hall List of Demands."

SHARC Update and Discussion Points for November 5th Meeting

1 – SHARC has weathered the storm and made the best of a mess. Though Sandy “rained on our parade” by forcing the cancellation of an event which we spent five weeks planning and organizing, it hasn't discouraged us from trying again. We'll come back bigger and better the next time.

There is no need to consider what possible shortcomings SHARC may have exhibited during the storm. Given the fact that we had many food donations, the rain date would have been the next day (Tuesday) during which the government was shut down. Sandy was an unpredictable storm which we only found out on the 26th was going hit us on the 29th of October (the day of our event). That said, the five weeks leading up to October 29th were a true show of our increased organizing ability. So, let's give ourselves a hand, dust ourselves off and chart the path forward.

As a result of Sandy, SHARC members were able to:

  • begin the conversation around bringing three councilmembers together in a meeting. They are Jim Graham (Human Services Oversight Committee), Michael Brown (Oversight Committee on Economic Development and Housing) and Kenyan McDuffie (oversight Committee on Jobs and Workforce Development).
  • Speak with several councilmembers on the dais during their legislative meeting and make the case for ending homelessness rather than maintaining it.
  • Arrange a meeting with the mayor

2 – Weekly and Homeless Town Hall Meetings during the holiday and hypothermia season:

a) What day do we want our next big event to fall on?

– November 26th (the last Monday of the month)?
– December 31st (the last Monday of the year)?

  • December 24th (Christmas Eve)?
  • December 17th (which would give us six weeks to organize and fall nicely between events highlighting homelessness and hunger in the third week of November and the Homeless Persons' Memorial Day on December 21st)?

b) Do we want to meet on Christmas Eve or new Year's Eve? Both fall on Mondays.

c) Do we want to do anything special around Thanksgiving (November 22nd)? The Fannie Mae Homeless Walkathon would have been on November 17th (the Saturday before Thanksgiving).

3 – What should our next big event (our make up event for “Occupy the DC Council”) be?

An idea is that we plan a march from CCNV to the Wilson Building beginning at 11 AM on November 26th. We make our case to the council and/or the mayor. We then return to CCNV around 1 PM for our regular Homeless Town Hall Meeting. Those who marched are given tickets upon exiting the Wilson Building and eat first.

Another idea is that we plan a large event inside of the Wilson Building on December 17th (possibly without a march) and invite churches and other groups to feed the homeless there.

It doesn't need to be “either/or”.  It can be “both/and”.
You are welcome to present additional ideas. These are just conversation starters.

4 – “The Future” of CCNV:

City officials and people from the business community have begun conversation around “The Future” of the CCNV Shelter. During my meeting with one such person, there was some confusion as to when either of us was talking about CCNV as is or the new concept which we envision. We began to refer to the revamped CCNV Shelter as “The Future”.

It is believed by many that the restrictive covenant between Ronald Reagan and Mitch Snyder mandates that the building be used as a homeless shelter until 2018 and the parking lot belongs to the homeless until 2099 with the right to renew the lease for the latter indefinitely. It is also believed that the property on which the building and parking lot sit is worth as much as $120M. What's certain is that, if the building were sold, ALL MONIES GENERATED FROM THE SALE MUST BE USED FOR THE HOMELESS COMMUNITY.

All of this adds up to the city being FORCED to use the CCNV property to assist the homeless community in one way or another. City officials and the business community have been informed that ANY PLANS TO BUILD ON THAT PIECE OF LAND WOULD HAVE TO INCLUDE HOUSING AT LEAST 1,350 HOMELESS PEOPLE. This gives homeless/housing advocates a constant (invariable) which we can use as a starting point for our thoughts on how best to assist the homeless residents of the Federal City Shelter (CCNV, Open Door, John L. Young, DC Central Kitchen and the Unity Health Clinic).

Plans that are being discussed include:

  • building a 10-story building on the parking lot
  • taking the present building up to 10 stories (possibly rebuilding it from the ground up)
  • having a mix of permanent apartments, supportive housing units, transitional housing units and shelter for at least 1,350 people
  • giving tax credits to contractors
  • having homeless people help design the program

While several people have expressed understandable skepticism about the city's plans to effectively assist the homeless community, let's bear in mind that a 24-year old restrictive covenant is holding them at bay. Let's also remember that, if we refuse to come to the table with those who are ostensibly there to work with us, we give them occasion to say that they reached out to us and WE refused to work with them. On the other hand, if we come to the table with city officials and members of the business community and they fail to make good on their promises, they give us occasion to pin the blame on THEM. So, let's give them a chance.

A contract employee of the business community might attend our November 19th SHARC meeting.

5 – Forming a charette: It has been suggested that we form a charette that would draw up a plan for ending homelessness in DC and then take that plan to government officials, as opposed to waiting for the governments to end homelessness.

6 – Creating unconventional partnerships: It has been suggested that SHARC develop unconventional partnerships with environmental groups, the LGBT community and others who don't usually advocate with or for the homeless, as there are various reasons for which we are inextricably connected to them. (Most homeless teens were thrown out of their parents' house for being LGBT and the construction of affordable housing lends itself to the creation of green jobs.)

7 – Protesting/opposing unconventional targets: It has been suggested that SHARC demonstrate in front of the Verizon Center and other businesses that have tried to push homeless people and/or homeless services (including housing for the homeless) out of their neighborhood.

8 – Making our enemies work for/with us: It has been suggested that we involve those who don't want the homeless in their neighborhoods (see item #7) in our effort to end homelessness.

112th Congress -- not even useful idiots

Apparently it takes more than a 13% approval rating to make the do-nothing, 112th Congress do something.  Below is what they did last week before recessing -- absolutely nothing.  You can click on the links for a more in-depth summary of each bill and once there, you can click on  (see full tally) to see who voted for, or against what, before you give any of these Keystone Cops your vote again:

Recent Senate Votes

Veterans Job Training – Motion to Waive - Vote Rejected (58-40, 2 Not Voting)

The Senate spent much of last week working on this bill that would have created a so-called jobs corps to assist Iraq and Afghanistan veterans in finding post-service employment. After invoking cloture on a motion to proceed to the bill, a substitute amendment by Veterans Affairs Chairwoman Patty Murray, D-Wash., was introduced. Among other things, the amendment would have required states to issue certain licenses, such as for plumbing or truck driving, to veterans without the normal requirements if eligible applicants had at least 10 years’ experience in related military activities. Budget Committee Ranking Member Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., raised a point of order against the amendment that its costs exceeded the amount of funding allowed under current budgetary limitations. Majority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., then moved to waive the point of order, which would have allowed the amendment to be debated. 60 votes are required to waive budgetary points of order, however, and proponents of the bill fell two votes shy. Sustaining the point of order effectively killed the bill.

*(Okay, veterans can use CLEP tests to get degrees based on their military activities to look for work, but not licenses based on their military activities, so they can actually work.  Yeah, that makes sense.)

~#~

Foreign Aid Suspension - Vote Rejected (10-81, 9 Not Voting)

Despite only having one must-pass item to clear before recessing – namely a continuing resolution to keep the government running, the Senate was in session into the wee hours of Saturday morning. This was initially due to the insistence of Rand Paul, R-Ky., on getting a vote for his bill to suspend foreign aid to Pakistan, Libya, and Egypt. Eventually an agreement was reached to hold a vote on the bill, which was soundly defeated due to bipartisan opposition.

*(Gotta keep those regime-change dollars flowing!)

~#~

Iran Nuclear Threat - Vote Agreed to (90-1, 9 Not Voting)

This resolution from Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., would reaffirm U.S. opposition to the Iranian nuclear program and states that the current regime of diplomacy and sanctions must continue until Iran meets certain benchmarks. These benchmarks include suspension of uranium enrichment, compliance with United Nations Security Council resolutions and full cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN’s nuclear watchdog. The resolution pointedly states that none of its language constitutes an authorization for the use of force. Rand Paul was the lone “nay” vote.

*(Does it really matter, amid Israel's war mongering, whether or not the "language constitutes an authorization for the use of force?")

~#~

Continuing Resolution - Vote Agreed to (62-30, 8 Not Voting)

After rejecting the Paul foreign aid measure and passing the Graham Iran resolution, the Senate was able to take up the continuing resolution that would fund government operations for the next six months at more or less flat levels (funding would increase by 0.6 percent for most programs.)

Recent House Votes

Student Loan Exemption for Deceased Veterans – Suspension - Vote Passed (400-0, 29 Not Voting)

This bill, passed under suspension of the rules and therefore requiring a two-thirds majority for passage, would exempt student loan debt from gross taxable income for veterans who die as the result of a service-related disability. Loan forgiveness would be back-dated to October 7, 2001, and families/survivors of the deceased would have up to one year after enactment of the bill to file for refunds. The bill now heads to the Senate, where its prospects are uncertain.

*("Prospects uncertain"?! -- Damn!  Even if you die in a made-up and/or unnecessary war, your family still may not get your student loan forgiven?  Nobody in those too-big-to-fail banks had to worry about that shit! SMDH)

~#~

Public Funding for Political Conventions – Suspension - Vote Passed (310-95, 24 Not Voting)

Another suspension bill would prohibit the use of monies in the Presidential Election Campaign Fund for financing presidential nomination conventions, e.g. the Democratic and Republican National Conventions. Under current law each major party is entitled to $4 million to stage their conventions and minor parties are entitled to an amount proportionate to their popular vote percentage in the previous election. An earlier House bill passed last December (Roll Call 873) would have eliminated the Presidential Election Campaign Fund, and thus the public financing of elections entirely. Unlike that measure, which was unanimously opposed by Democrats, the more modest bill passed last week attracted about half of all Democrats voting as well as all Republicans. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., has introduced a companion measure with bipartisan support in the Senate.

*("Each major party is entitled to $4 million -- to stage conventions?!"  People can't eat, work, or live affordably -- and they are entitled to all this?!  As my grandmama used to say, Lawd ha' mercy!)

~#~

Welfare Work Requirements – Disapproval Resolution - Vote Passed (250-164, 15 Not Voting)

The issue of welfare was a persistent theme in the presidential campaign for months – with the Republican nominee Mitt Romney accusing President Obama of removing work requirements from the program and allowing people to collect money with no strings attached. At issue was a July 12 memorandum issued by the Health and Human Services Department (HHS), which oversees the welfare program, whose technical name is Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). The memo laid out a proposed waiver program for states that meet certain requirements for boosting TANF employment goals. Republicans claim that HHS does not have the waiver authority it claims in the memo, and that the proposal should have been formally submitted to Congress since it amounts to an agency rulemaking. The latter assertion was supported by a Government Accountability Office report. Partisans on both sides have either decried or supported the waiver proposal, including the two chief architects of 1990s welfare reform, former President Clinton and former Speaker Newt Gingrich. The action taken by the House last week would repeal the move by HHS. In order for the repeal to become law, however, a similar resolution would have to pass the Senate and be signed by the president, both highly unlikely.

*(All I'm going to say about this one is -- it's already been pretty interesting how this has been twisted by both parties on the "campaign trail.)

~#~

STEM Visa Program - Suspension - Vote Failed (257-158, 14 Not Voting)

Immigration has always been a partisan battleground, but one area the parties seemed to have formed agreement in the 112th Congress was on the need to boost immigration by high-skill workers, particularly those in the so-called STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, mathematics). House Judiciary Chairman Lamar Smith, R.-Tex., had been working with Senate Judiciary Immigration Subcommittee Chairman Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., for months on just such a proposal. As with so many bipartisan efforts in the last two years, however, talks foundered. Both chairmen support creating roughly 50,000 visas for graduates of U.S. institutions with advanced degrees in STEM fields. The detail that derailed talks is that Smith wanted those visas to come at the expense of an existing program, the diversity visa lottery, which sets aside slots for people from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the U.S. Schumer and other Democrats wanted to simply create new slots for the STEM graduates while holding the diversity lottery harmless. Last week Smith and House leadership decided to try their luck on the floor with a suspension vote for Smith’s proposal; it ended up falling 20 votes shy of the two-thirds needed for passage. Given the bipartisan support for the overall idea, it is possible talks could resume in the lame duck session, though the crowded agenda makes any decisive action unlikely before next year.

*(Way to foment "divide and conquer" at home and abroad, no?)

~#~

Manhattan Project National Park – Suspension - Vote Failed (237-180, 12 Not Voting)

Another failed suspension vote came on this bill to set aside federal land in New Mexico, Washington state, and Tennessee for a national park commemorating the Manhattan Project that led to the creation of the atomic bomb. Most suspensions are non-controversial, and Democrats in particular are usually in favor of creating parkland, but opponents of the measure said it would send the wrong message to allies such as Japan, which suffered mass casualties as a result of the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of World War II. The bill fell 41 votes short.

*(At least most folk had the common decency to stop this crass display of American arrogance)

~#~

Energy Regulatory Rollback – Passage - Vote Passed (233-175, 21 Not Voting)

The final bill passed by the House before the November elections was a summation of sorts regarding one of Republicans’ core electoral and policy arguments – namely that regulations, particularly those concerning energy production – are hurting the economy. H.R. 3409 is a smorgasbord containing the texts of five different bills, four of which had previously passed the House (Roll Calls 249, 573, 741 and 800, all in 2011). The original bill would prevent the Interior Secretary from issuing any regulations before 2014 that would result in damage to the coal industry, e.g., reductions in coal mining jobs, the amount of coal available for consumption or export, etc. The other proposals would: prevent EPA from regulating greenhouse gases as a pollutant under the Clean Air Act, as well as effectively repeal automobile efficiency standards that would increase gas mileage to 54.5 mpg by 2025; create a cross-agency council for analyzing EPA regulations and their effect on the economy, as well as pre-empting a handful of EPA rules from being finalized and nullifying others already finalized; prevent EPA from regulating coal ash - a byproduct of coal combustion that some states use to make asphalt – instead allowing the states to regulate it as they see fit; and limiting EPA authority over water-quality standards. The Senate will not take up the bill when it returns, and the president has issued a veto threat.

*(Listen to Marsha Coleman-Adebayo on the Clean Air Act from the 9:15 - 11:13 click in this interview with Tavis Smiley)

Upcoming Votes

Sportsmen's Act of 2012 - S.3525

Before breaking for recess, the Senate invoked cloture on the motion to proceed to this catch-all bill sponsored by Jon Tester, D-Mont. It would loosen a variety of regulations on hunters and fishermen, particularly regarding their activities on public lands.

*(Hmmm, "(1) authorize a state to pay up to 90% of the costs of acquiring land for, expanding, or constructing a public target range;" -- better get your orange reflector jackets! "Requires such projects to secure, through rights-of-way or the acquisition of lands or interests from willing sellers, recreational public access to existing federal public lands that have significantly restricted access to hunting, fishing, and other recreational purposes." -- wonder what happens if sellers aren't "willing?"  What?  It could happen!)

All in what game???

I purposely omitted this last - "What the hell are you talking about Earl?!" - from the previous post. It was directed toward all the broken promises the Changeling made to the Latino community as he bellowed his co-opted, “¡Sí, se puede!” from both the campaign trail and the Big House. They were so numerous, and so blatantly flaunted, I had to stop, take a breath and gather myself before I wrote another word.

In the interim, I received two “new post” alerts from similar-but-different sources within hours of each other. One was Earl’s - Obama Plays the Race Card, and There's Nothing Wrong With That; the other was - News With Nezua Empire Games - MAJOR POWERS PLAY MAJOR GAMES (posted below).

While both were impassioned entreaties to their respective kinfolk about the Changeling, upcoming elections and the “games people play” - it was impossible to miss that they were clearly polar opposites in both their motivation and in their giving a shit about the whole of humanity.

As if in “response” to my “call” – Nezua posted his honest, enlightened and documented account, of exactly what I wanted to say. I knew I couldn’t say it any better, so I asked him to let me post it here, and he graciously consented:

I'm so proud of Nezua for standing up and saying, “No! Using us for votes – is NOT okay! Lying so you can “claim credit” – is NOT okay! And having the unmitigated gall to come back again, after screwing us over so brazenly - is certainly NOT okay!”

In solidarity, I too say - “This is not a game!”

As I told my friend Kitty in the comments a couple posts ago, “Latinos “don't need "aid." What they need – is a clear path to the same citizenship opportunity made available to the European immigrants who came here - and later became "white." Once they get that, no "Dream Act" - which would again, pit them against each other, and us - would be necessary.” And I stand by that statement.

Yet, even though the pain of Obama’s deception obviously cut very deeply, Nezua, in stark contrast to Earl, advised his “gente” - in truth, love and respect for their decision-making - to do what they believe is right for them - not the Changeling - in November. Imagine that!

Now my brother, Earl on the other hand, took a decidedly different tack in advising his kinfolk. As I read his above-linked post, I lost all the respect I was trying to have for this man.  All I could do was shake my damned head in disgust and say, "Man, you have no shame at all do you?”

Instead of presenting some useful, sensible, truthful analysis on which Black voters could rely to help make informed decisions next week, he chose to ratchet-up his speechifying instead - peppering it with the same fear, lies and disrespectful, parroted blather being spewed by the other side of the same coin:

The pitch to black voters is to get out in November and vote like your life depends on it. That means voting to save a slew of endangered Congressional Democrats. The stakes are well-known. A GOP grab of the House, even without the Senate, will almost certainly mean endless committee investigations of Obama administration actions, funding and appropriation stalls and sabotage, and a relentless no to every Obama initiative from energy to immigration reform. The escalation of congressional wars would be distracting, debilitating, and pose deep danger to Obama's reelection bid in 2012. (link mine)
Translation:

  • “Yeah, Black folk, he’s coming back to USE you to help him keep those do-nothing clowns in office. And that’s okay.
  • Forget he’s given you nothing but his ass to kiss since he came begging and lying the first time. That’s okay too!
  • Forget you’re unemployed, or have been for some time, or still do not make a living wage. All okay.
  • Forget that your “American Dream” homes are being foreclosed upon as we speak, or you can barely pay your rent. Of course, that’s okay!
  • Forget he and his, continue to “play games” not only with your very lives, but with those of your children, by continuing to funnel Byrne Grant money to states, which then use it to hurt, not help our community - by funneling it to their respective agencies overseeing their prison industrial complexes. I’m sure that’s okay witcha!
  • As a matter of fact, forget ALL of their hypocrisy and just run on out there and Pull That Lever for whomever the “O” man says you should. There’s nothing wrong with that!

I swear I felt like I’d been transported to Bizarro World, with Earl blasting the Bizarro Code from his perch at HuffPo:
"Us do the opposite of all Earthly things! Us hate beauty! Us love ugliness! Is a big crime to make anything perfect on Bizarro World!"
Why on earth should people be trying to “save a slew of endangered Democrats” who’ve not done one thing they’ve been saying they would do – for two administrations??  Personally, I welcome the “endless committee investigations of Obama administration actions and funding (seeing as over the last few years, they’ve raised enough money to feed, clothe and house a small nation for eternity!).” And since he’s not had an “initiative” worth two cents since his transcendance ascendance to the throne - to what exactly, will the Republicans say “No?”

When one cannot point to any substantive change in an existence, after throwing all that support behind a man who did his damndest to degrade them – when he wasn’t ignoring them, the time for “playing games” are over. It’s time now that we create a new reality for ourselves – one that reflects the love, power, humility, persistence, strength, knowledge and grace - that got us this far in the first place.

Sure, the Republicans, and their red-headed (no offense HT!), Tea Party step-children, are - without a doubt - the epitome of the White Supremacist Capitalist Patriarchy. With their privilege still very much intact, their racism is palpable and their fear-stoked, twisted lies are even more obvious than they’ve been in a very long time. But, so what! At least now you know exactly with whom you’re dealing!

And who, in their right mind, will stand with them in their overt hatred and spiteful bigotry toward their fellow countrymen that is sure to come? I say -no better way to find out than if their supposed Congressional take-over happens (now had the Changeling really been a “change agent” from the jump, we’d have all been well on our way to figuring that out by now! Just sayin’).

But rather than be afraid of their supposed, Congressional take-over (which I doubt will happen completely), I look forward to it. Why? Because I know they won’t be able to contain themselves - perhaps then, ushering in the “real revolution” this country sorely needs.

Politicians are always on the stroll for the next deep-pocketed John or Jane, willing to pay handsomely (both literally and figuratively) for their “favors.” Sadly, that's what democracy looks like in these United States. But trust me, there is something very wrong with joining that cabal of “the greedy-using-the-needy” for "sport" because, again – this is not a game. But if it were, just keep in mind - no team goes undefeated forever!

"You can get with this, or you can get with that" - some choice...

Unlike the little rodents in the video, allegedly offering a better quality product than what's already out on the streets - the little Democrat rodents in DC have just shown that they were merely shining up the same old shit and calling it gold with Reid's Don't Ask Don't Tell/Dream Act amendment.

I'm no fan of McConnell or the Republicans, - but I definitely co-sign this observation:
“They want to use this week for a political exercise. They want to weigh this bill down with controversy in a transparent attempt to show their special interest groups that they haven’t forgotten about them ahead of the election.”

“This is not a serious exercise. It’s a show,” he added. “And it’s because of shows like this that our [Democratic] friends have lost credibility with the public.” (emphasis mine)
No font of credibility his damned self, he does, however, make a couple of salient points to which the Obama faithful might want to pay close attention:
  1. You gave your support, your money and your votes on a wing and a damned prayer - to a consummate con man and his handlers who've been lying about what they're going to do for you since day one;
  2. In return, they shit in your hand - AND! - expect you to say thank you in November and beyond (and sadly, like many who resigned themselves to a Shrub second-term after he'd gotten the country knee-deep in his "Mission Accomplished" bullshit - you probably will).
When I read this back in May, I was cautiously optimistic - even though there was evidence of some Ickey Shuffling going on:
The push to end the military’s “don’t ask don’t tell” policy that prohibits gays from serving openly in the military cleared two major hurdles Thursday, with the House backing repeal by a 234-194 vote, while the Senate Armed Services Committee voted 16-12 in favor of that body’s version of the change.

Both repeals, offered as amendments to a defense spending bill, would remove the policy only after the Pentagon completes a study due in December on the impact of the change on the military. (emphasis mine
That, "remove the policy only after the Pentagon completes a study due in December" part, seemed to me a set-up, and an awfully precarious row to hoe for actively serving, LGBT service members (do read the study questions!). But, since they'd tacked it onto the defense authorization bill and, since -
The White House and the Pentagon both approved the compromise in the amendments that allows Congress to act while granting the president, the defense secretary and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff the ultimate authority to implement repeal when they are satisfied that the military’s readiness, recruiting, retention and morale would not be adversely impacted by it. (emphasis mine)
- I figured it had at least a snowball's chance. But once I reached this now, pretty-much-accepted-as-real-progress-in-matters-of-equality sentence uttered by Sen. Carl Levin -
"Today’s action by the Senate Armed Services Committee is an important step to end this discriminatory policy.” (emphasis mine)
- cautiously optimistic was immediately replaced with the increasingly nagging suspicion that there were plenty of those "Games Mother Never Taught You" being played by people for whom no "urgency of now" exists. Then came Maj. Margaret Witt, LT. Dan Choi (I really like what I see of this guy!), Lt. Col. Victor Fehrenbach and so many others - bringing with them the memory of my grandmother's tried-and-true caution: "Always follow your first mind." She was right.

In this NPR piece published before the vote, R. Clarke Cooper, executive director of the Log Cabin Republicans beat old Harry to the press-conference punch with this statement:

"The majority leader is setting himself up to simply say 'I tried' when Republicans vote against cloture on the defense bill today"... "If the(defense bill)fails to proceed this week because of cheap political stunts, it is the Senate majority leadership that is should be held accountable, not the unreasonably slighted minority."
Well, we can quibble about "unreasonably slighted minority" but, you gotta admit - this is too funny! I'll bet Harry had that exact speech all ready!

Really now - it's not like he didn't know that Republicans were planning to try and block his afterthought of an amendment!  It's not like - with their Congressional majority and the seat in the Big House on lock - they hadn't had enough time to do their usual backroom, wheelin' and dealin'! What - of any substance - can he possibly say??  Don't bother answering - I think Maxine's got that covered:

And speaking of that now, pretty-much-accepted-as-real-progress-in-matters-of-equality sentence, here it is again - in an emailed petition I got yesterday from Reform Immigration FOR America's, Marissa Graciosa:
"Our country and our children suffer under a broken immigration system.  Pass the defense reauthorization bill and the DREAM Act as a step toward comprehensive immigration reform." (emphasis mine)
No malice or disrespect intended Ms. Graciosa, but please - see numbers 1. and 2. above.

The Changeling's politically expedient, "Suing Arizona" stunt notwithstanding, just ask yourself this question - Why in the world would the people, who definitely did numbers 1. and 2. (not to mention sending 1,200 additional troops to the border to keep people who look like you out), and those who crowed about the passage of SB1070, be invested in the DREAM Act's passage, much less comprehensive immigration reform (aside from more cannon fodder for war, of course)??

Hell, in this piece, just a little over a month ago, Sen. Jon Kyl said:

“As we’ve said many times, until the border is substantially more secure than it is today, there’s not going to be a consensus to move forward on immigration legislation.” (emphasis mine)

I could be wrong, but I just don't see any of 'em giving two shits unless there's something REALLY BIG in it for them. And seeing as the Changeling and his crew have already gotten their really big something from you guys (and us!) via his selection, they've more than shown that there'll be little or no bending over backwards to do what is right for the remainder of this Administration's term (but look out in the run-up to 2012!).

And the Republicans? Given their forever-pandering to the majority "white" voting bloc of "real Americans" in these United States, I doubt there'll ever be any backward-bending over on their part. As a matter of fact, as long as most society-identified "Others," held hostage by the trauma of White Supremacist Capitalist Patriarchy, remain in this weird, Stockholm Syndrome existence, celebrating the crumbs, while resisting true freedom - there's really no need for them to ever do anything.

The solution? Take a hint from my beautiful sister, Lauryn Hill  - and choose not to "get with this, or that":

Democrats or Republicans - same thing, people!!

I got this email from MoveOn.org today and thought it was hi-larious - let me just count the ways (all emphasis mine):

###

Dear MoveOn member,

Election Day is less than two months away, and we need to decide today whether we'll have enough resources for a major campaign to help stop the Republicans and their corporate allies from taking over Congress.  (1. Guess we can all agree on one thing - democracy is always for sale)

In a survey over the weekend, 92% of MoveOn members said that we should work broadly to help Democratic candidates—especially now that corporate front groups are spending $400 million to boost Republicans' chances.  (2. Now? So we should forget the millions for which the Dems and their front man prostituted themselves up to now? - UPDATE:  This is interesting, no?)

So here's our plan to do it:

• We'll launch a giant recruitment drive to turn out thousands of volunteers for dozens and dozens of vulnerable Democrats across the country. (3.  Please!  If they were doing what the people sent them to Congress to do, their asses wouldn't BE "vulnerable!  To the Changeling and his cohorts, I say:

Nate Beeler/Washington Examiner
We'll use the media and creative tactics to show that corporate front groups are pouring money into these races and helping elect Republicans to carry out their agenda.  (4.  Yeah, you of all people ought to know the media will shill for anybody with deep pockets - look how it worked in getting the Changling "selected."  And I won't even touch that whole "creative tactics" thing, except to say - Democratic Rules & Bylaws Committee - May 31, 2008!!)

• We'll especially focus on top progressive heroes like Sen. Barbara Boxer and Rep. Alan Grayson who are facing the fights of their lives.  (5. She, of the land of economic meltdown and he, the man who spoke so loudly about health care, but didn't carry a big enough stick to get a public option included?  Heroes??  Really??)

And because nearly 80% of MoveOn members said not to use our scarce resources to help Democrats who've sided repeatedly with corporate lobbyists on key votes like health care, we'll stay out of those races(6. Hell, they've ALL sided with corporate lobbyists on key votes like health care - on one side of it, or the other (need I remind you - again - about that pesky little "public option" disappearing?!)

This is a hugely ambitious plan that will involve serious work in 30-60 critical races.

All told, it'll cost at least $1.1 million and require at least 100,000 volunteer hours. To move forward, we need commitments for that much time and money—otherwise, we'll have to scale back the plan.

(7. C'mon people!  Don't you think that $1.1 million could be used for way more important shit?)

So we need to know today how much each MoveOn member is willing to chip in. We'll need at least 108 pledges from people in Washington. You don't have to donate right now—we just need to know how much support we can count on over the next two months.

Click to let us know how much you can pledge to stop the Republican takeover of Congress

(8.  Not one-red-cent!  Quiet as it's kept, both parties need to get the hell out of Congress!)

$15

$30

$75

$100

Another amount

I can't pledge any money right now, but I'll volunteer my time.

Thanks for all you do.

Democrats have had the majority in Congress for quite some time now.  They've done nothing but either, allowed themselves to be bullied by Shrub & Co. OR, worked really hard at that which has been most politically expedient - for themselves.  Why MoveOn would even ask anybody to throw good money after bad is just beyond me -- and quite amusing!
